‘We’ve Looked at How New Zealand Did It’: Roston Chase Plots India Upset

West Indies captain Roston Chase has revealed that his team is preparing to face India by studying and replicating the successful methods used by New Zealand in their historic series win. New Zealand became the first side in 12 years to beat India at home, ending their 18-series unbeaten streak.

Chase explained, “We’ve looked at how New Zealand played in those conditions and what they did to succeed. There are lessons for us in the way they approached each session and put India under pressure.”

The Caribbean side has gone through match footage to analyze strategies, including field placements, bowling plans, and batting approaches that unsettled India. This in-depth review aims to equip West Indies with a stronger tactical foundation before stepping onto Indian soil.

Adapting to Spin-Friendly Conditions

Chase acknowledged that one of the biggest challenges visiting teams face in India is the dominance of spin-friendly pitches. “We know spin will play a massive role in this series, so we’re preparing ourselves both mentally and technically to handle that challenge,” he said. To strengthen their bowling attack, West Indies have included uncapped spinner Khary Pierre, who has been in impressive form in the domestic red-ball season.

Chase expressed confidence in the selection, stating, “Khary has been taking wickets consistently, and we believe he can make a real impact here.” The team’s batting unit is also working intensively to counter India’s spinners and ensure they can build substantial totals — a key aspect that has historically determined outcomes in Indian conditions.

Embracing the Underdog Tag

Despite a disappointing recent outing against Australia — including a collapse where they were bowled out for just 27 runs — Chase sees the India series as a new beginning. “This is a fresh start for us. We go in as underdogs with nothing to lose, and that makes us dangerous,” he asserted.

The captain believes that playing without the weight of expectations will allow his players to express themselves more freely and adopt an aggressive, fearless style. “If we can play with freedom and keep pushing India out of their comfort zone, anything is possible,” he added. Combining lessons from New Zealand’s victory with their natural flair, the West Indies hope to stage a strong fight and prove that they can still compete with the best in world cricket.
