The opening Test between India and South Africa at Kolkata saw drama both on and off the field. While India fell short by 30 runs in a match that lasted less than three days, pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s on-field remarks sparked a controversy that drew sharp criticism from former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif.
A stump mic caught Bumrah’s chat with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant during an LBW appeal in the 14th over of South Africa’s first innings. Commenting on opposition captain Temba Bavuma’s height, Bumrah used the Hindi term “bauna bhi hai,” meaning “short” or “dwarf.” Although Bumrah later spoke to Bavuma after the game, signaling the matter was settled, Kaif emphasized the importance of caution in such moments, especially with stump mics capturing players’ conversations.
Kaif’s Take On The Stump Mic Moment
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif acknowledged that Bumrah’s comment might not have been intentionally offensive toward Bavuma. However, he criticized the lapse in judgment, noting that senior players should be mindful of the stump mic’s reach. “What you speak can’t be taken back,” Kaif said, highlighting how casual remarks can quickly spiral into controversy.
He pointed out that stump mics serve a dual purpose—bringing fans closer to the game but also exposing players’ private remarks. Kaif questioned why Bumrah allowed room for misunderstanding in a high-stakes game, especially knowing the media scrutiny such incidents draw. While the comment itself did not escalate into a major dispute, Kaif’s remarks underline the growing expectation of professionalism in international cricket.
Bumrah’s Record-Breaking Performance Overshadowed
Despite the off-field talk, Bumrah was India’s standout performer in the Test. On Day 1, he delivered a masterful spell, picking up 5 wickets for just 27 runs in 14 overs. This marked his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, equaling Bhagwat Chandrasekhar for the fifth-most by an Indian bowler in the format.
He also surpassed Wasim Akram’s record, becoming the Asian bowler with the most fifers against SENA teams, now boasting 13. Furthermore, with his tally of 232 wickets in 51 matches, Bumrah is now India’s fifth-highest wicket-taker among fast bowlers. Despite these incredible achievements, the conversation was briefly overshadowed by the stump mic incident. However, both sides appeared to move on without lingering bitterness, allowing the focus to return to the contest.
