KKR captain Shreyas Iyer shared his difficulties after an outstanding ODI World Cup performance as India’s No. 4. Following poor scores in the Test series against South Africa and England, Iyer was dropped from the Test team.
Reports indicated that Shreyas Iyer experienced groin pain and notified his domestic team, Mumbai, that he couldn’t participate in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal. This reportedly displeased the board, leading to his exclusion from the latest central contracts.
Now, however, Shreyas Iyer is in a much better position, with his team close to securing their third IPL title. Ahead of the final against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), Shreyas shared his thoughts with reporters:
“I was struggling after the World Cup in the longer format. When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it. But at the same time, the competition is with myself.”
“When IPL was approaching, all I wanted was to see to it that I put in my best foot forward and whatever planning and strategizing we did before it, if we could execute it to the best of our ability, we would have been a great spot and that’s where we are now.”
In IPL 2024, Shreyas Iyer has amassed 345 runs in 13 matches with a strike rate of 146.19, including two half-centuries. He was unbeaten with 58* against SRH, leading his team to the final by winning Qualifier 1.
Shreyas Iyer discusses Gautam Gambhir’s influence on KKR
Gautam Gambhir rejoined KKR as a mentor before the IPL 2024 season, and many attribute Kolkata’s success in reaching the final to his mindset and expertise. Shreyas Iyer highlighted how Gambhir’s strategies have helped KKR achieve their full potential, stating:
“I feel he (Gambhir) has immense knowledge about how the game has played, he has won two titles with KKR and his strategies have been spot on in terms of what execution we have to make. He adds a lot of cream in the team. Hopefully, we continue with the same momentum in the final as well with his knowledge being put out there.”
Gambhir led KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, with the first win at Chepauk. This Sunday (May 26), Kolkata could potentially replicate that success at the same venue, 12 years later.
