Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar wants Team India skipper Rohit Sharma to play all the ODI matches with the 2023 ICC World Cup in sight. He expressed that family commitments should be kept aside keeping in mind the upcoming mega-event. The ICC World Cup is all set to take place in October-November this year in India.

Rohit Sharma missed the first ODI against Australia in the recently concluded series due to family commitments. Hardik Pandya led Team India in his absence in the match. Sunil Gavaskar expressed that he cam understand Rohit had a family commitment this time, however, when it comes to the World, the skipper needs to play all the games.

“I think he needs to play every game. You can’t have a captain who is there for one match and not there for the rest. It is so important. It can happen to any other player but I think, I know it was a family commitment, so he had to be there. That’s understandable,” Sunil Gavaskar said to Starsports.

“When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have a family commitment; it’s as simple as that. Maybe before that, finish everything that you have, unless it’s an emergency. Emergency is something completely different,” he added.

You need continuity in leadership: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar further expressed that there should be continuity in leadership. He added that when continuity is missing, the team will be confused between two leaders. Sunil Gavaskar said to Starsports,

“You need continuity in leadership. There’s a feeling that you have got everybody with you, otherwise, there are two leaders. Then there are two leaders that the team is looking at.”

Team India lost the three-match ODI series against Australia by 2-1. The hosts lost the decider by 21 runs, chasing 270 runs. The players will now join their respective Indian Premier League teams, as the tournament kicks off later this month.
