Ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, questions have emerged regarding Rohit Sharma’s place in the squad and his leadership role. The veteran opener might not be a guaranteed selection for the ICC event and could also be required to relinquish the captaincy.
Reports suggest that Rohit may need to feature in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy to stake his claim for a spot in the one-day side. Currently, he remains India’s ODI skipper, having already retired from T20Is and Tests. He last played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2018, featuring for Mumbai in the semi-final against Hyderabad in Bengaluru.
Opening the innings, Rohit scored 17 runs from 24 deliveries, helping Mumbai secure victory. Due to international duties, he was unavailable for the final. That season, he featured in two matches and accumulated 50 runs.
The upcoming edition is set to start on December 24, 2025, with the final slated for January 18, 2026. Rohit might not be available for the entire tournament since several fixtures coincide with India’s international commitments. His most recent domestic outing was in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, where he turned out for Mumbai in a single match.
Rohit Sharma Guided India To 2025 Champions Trophy Win
India clinched the 2025 Champions Trophy under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, marking their second consecutive ICC triumph after he guided them to the 2024 T20 World Cup title. In the tournament, the veteran opener amassed 180 runs in five matches at an average of 36, registering one half-century.
In the final, Rohit produced a match-winning knock of 76 off 83 deliveries as India overcame New Zealand by four wickets. His innings, studded with seven boundaries and three sixes, earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Rohit made his ODI debut in 2007 against Ireland in Belfast and has since featured in 273 matches, accumulating 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76, including 32 centuries and 58 fifties. India’s next ODI assignment will be a series against Australia in October, where Rohit is likely to feature in international cricket again.
