Former England captain Nasser Hussain has expressed concerns about the decline of England’s white-ball cricket, stating that the team has fallen significantly from the level they once achieved under Eoin Morgan. England, currently on a white-ball tour in India, aimed to gain confidence before heading to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. However, their struggles continued as they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in the T20I series against a dominant Indian side.
Their difficulties persisted in the first ODI in Nagpur, where India’s spinners—Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav—exposed England’s weakness against spin, restricting them to a modest 247. India comfortably chased down the target, with Shubman Gill (87), Shreyas Iyer (59), and Axar Patel (52) steering the team to victory with over 11 overs to spare.
Nasser Hussain Highlights England’s Decline
Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast, Hussain pointed out England’s recurring issues in white-ball cricket. He noted that while England managed to stay competitive in certain phases of matches, costly mistakes—such as Phil Salt’s run-out in the first ODI—led to their downfall. He emphasized that spin bowling has repeatedly troubled England, both in the T20Is and ODIs, and that they have struggled to adapt.
Reflecting on their past success, Hussain stated that England has drifted away from the dominance they enjoyed under Morgan and coach Trevor Bayliss, a duo that led them to World Cup victory in 2019. In contrast, India has demonstrated remarkable depth in their squad, with players like Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill stepping up seamlessly.
Crucial Months Ahead for England
Hussain believes that the coming months will be crucial for England’s white-ball team. He acknowledged India’s strength as a formidable side, having won the T20 World Cup and reaching the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad. He stressed that England must rediscover their winning formula and address their weaknesses, especially against spin.
With two ODIs left in the series, England will look to bounce back in the second match against India in Cuttack. Finding the right combination will be essential as they prepare for bigger challenges, including the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
