The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for an explanation regarding the absence of Pakistan’s representative, Sumair Ahmed, from the post-final presentation ceremony of the Champions Trophy in Dubai. As the official host of the tournament, PCB expected to have a representative on the stage, but their exclusion has raised concerns and sparked a debate over fairness and transparency in ICC events.
The Incident at the Presentation Ceremony
After India’s victory over New Zealand in the final, the trophy presentation took place with four officials present on stage. These included: Jay Shah (ICC Chair), Roger Binny (BCCI President), Devajit Saikia (BCCI Secretary), Roger Twose (NZC Director).
Despite Pakistan being the designated host, no PCB official was included in the ceremony. The presence of two BCCI representatives, particularly Saikia, has raised eyebrows within PCB circles, as typically, only one representative from each national board is expected.
PCB’s Stand on the Issue
Initially, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was supposed to represent Pakistan, but due to health reasons, he was unable to attend. PCB assumed Sumair Ahmed, the tournament director and PCB’s COO, would take his place. However, the ICC did not reach out for confirmation or provide any clarification on this matter.
A PCB official stated that they believe it was ICC’s responsibility to ensure that Pakistan was properly represented on the stage, given their status as the host nation.
ICC’s Protocol on Representation at Presentations
Historically, host nations have had a presence at ICC event presentations, regardless of whether their team reached the final. This incident deviates from that norm, which has left PCB questioning the motives behind the decision.
Previous Incidents Leading to PCB’s Frustration
This is not the first time PCB has clashed with ICC during this tournament. Two prior incidents also led to PCB questioning ICC’s handling of the event:
- Pakistan’s Name Missing from the Logo – During India’s match against Bangladesh, the official broadcast omitted Pakistan’s name from the Champions Trophy logo.
- Indian National Anthem Played in Lahore – In another mix-up, the Indian national anthem briefly played before an Australia vs. England match in Lahore. The ICC blamed it on a DJ error, but PCB was unimpressed with the explanation.
The Hosting Agreement and Its Complexities
The tournament was originally scheduled to be held entirely in Pakistan. However, due to political tensions and the Indian government’s refusal to allow its team to travel to Pakistan, the matches were split between Pakistan and Dubai. This agreement was meant to ensure fair representation for Pakistan as hosts, but recent events have left PCB feeling undermined.

Implications of This Controversy
PCB has officially written to ICC demanding an explanation. If ICC fails to respond adequately, PCB may take stronger action, such as filing a formal complaint or seeking support from other member boards. The ICC has yet to comment on the issue. However, based on past experiences, they might either issue a statement explaining their stance or quietly attempt to smooth things over with PCB.
