India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill, has been recalled to the T20I squad and appointed vice-captain for the 2025 Asia Cup, announced on Tuesday, August 19. The 25-year-old takes over from Axar Patel and will make his T20I return since July 2024 at the tournament starting in the UAE on September 7.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav noted that Gill had been focused on Test cricket recently, which limited his appearances in the T20 format. He also reminded that Gill had previously served as vice-captain during his last T20I stint.
“Last time when he played T20 post WC, when we went to SL, he was vice-captain. That’s where we started new cycle for T20WC. After that we got busy with Test cricket, and he didn’t get opportunities. We’re happy to have him,” Yadav said on Tuesday (via ESPN Cricinfo).
Men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar expressed hope that Gill would carry forward his impressive form from the England tour. The right-handed batsman scored 754 runs across five Tests, including four centuries.
“He is already leading in test cricket, like Surya mentioned he was VC in the last T20I he played for India. We obviously see leadership quality in him. His form in England is what we are hoping for,” Agarkar said on Tuesday (via @AhmedGT_ on X).
Shubman Gill Makes Comeback As India Announce 15-Member Squad For 2025 Asia Cup
The biggest talking point in India’s 15-member squad announcement for the 2025 Asia Cup was the recall of Shubman Gill and his appointment as vice-captain. Yashasvi Jaiswal, a member of the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad, missed out on the main squad but was named in the five-member standby list.
Jitesh Sharma earned a spot as one of the two wicketkeeper-batsmen alongside Sanju Samson. Rinku Singh, who had only been a standby for the 2024 T20 World Cup, also secured a place in the squad. Among the notable exclusions was Shreyas Iyer, who was left out of both the main squad and the standby list.
