Shubman Gill

India’s captain Shubman Gill will miss the rest of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, due to a neck injury. The star batter was admitted to the hospital after Day 2, with Rishabh Pant stepping in as captain. Pant will lead the team for the remainder of the Test, as the BCCI confirmed that Gill remains under medical observation.

The board issued an official statement ahead of Day 3 on Sunday, November 16.

“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play,” the BCCI statement read.

“He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.”

Shubman Gill appeared to be in pain after attempting a sweep shot against Simon Harmer early in his innings on Day 2. He left the field with the medical team and was later admitted to the hospital for scans and further evaluation.

Rishabh Pant Guides India To Control As South Africa Ends Day 2 At 93-7

With Shubman Gill unable to resume his innings due to injury, South Africa took the remaining nine wickets to bowl India out for 189 in their first innings. The hosts held a slim 30-run lead and needed a strong bowling performance to prevent the Proteas from gaining momentum.

Rishabh Pant, captaining India in Tests for the first time temporarily, marshaled the team effectively, leaving South Africa struggling at 93-7 by stumps. Ravindra Jadeja produced a devastating spell, claiming four wickets, while spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel contributed crucial breakthroughs.
