In the recent ODI series against the West Indies, India’s dominant winning streak came to an end after a period of four years. Since 2019, Team India had managed to win 9 consecutive ODIs against the Caribbean team, but they faced a setback in the second ODI. Led by Sheh Hope, the West Indies team caused a major upset by defeating India.
The second ODI marked the hosts’ return to the cricket scene after their disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup. In this match, India was bundled out for 181 runs, and the Windies successfully chased down the target with 6 wickets remaining, levelling the series 1-1. West Indies captain Shay Hope emerged as the hero, scoring an unbeaten 63 runs to guide his team to victory.
The defeat in the second ODI also put an end to India’s longest winning streak against the West Indies. Prior to this, India had won 9 consecutive matches since 2019, making it the longest streak against the Caribbean team in India’s cricket history.
In terms of individual achievements, Shubman Gill made a mark in ODI cricket by claiming the number one spot, breaking Babar Azam’s record.

However, despite Gill’s strong performance and a brilliant start provided by Ishaan Kishan (55) and Shubman Gill (34) who added 90 runs for the first wicket, India’s inexperienced middle-order failed to capitalize, and they lost the next 9 wickets for just 91 runs.
Chasing India’s score, the West Indies team got off to a good start with Kyle Mayers (36) and Brandon King (15) putting on a 53-run opening partnership. However, Shardul Thakur’s impressive bowling led to the fall of crucial wickets. Kuldeep Yadav also contributed by dismissing Shimron Hetmyer.
Despite the efforts to spice up the match, West Indies captain Shay Hope (63) played a pivotal role in guiding his team to victory, partnering with Brendan King (48) to achieve an unbeaten 91-run stand for the 5th wicket.
In this match, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were rested, and the responsibility of captaincy was handed over to Hardik Pandya. The absence of Kohli in the middle order highlighted India’s reliance on their key players. Overall, the defeat against the West Indies marked the end of India’s remarkable winning streak and showcased the importance of having a strong and experienced middle-order lineup in the team.
