Team India batter Shubman Gill revealed his conversation with the team management about batting at No. 3 in the ongoing Test series against West Indies. Shubman Gill has primarily opened the innings for India in Test cricket. However, he has been tasked with filling the shoes of Cheteshwar Pujara at number three, with Yashasvi Jaiswal opening the innings.
Shubman Gill revealed that the team management asked him for his preferred batting position. He expressed that he wants to bat at the No. 3 position in Test cricket. He has done a good job opening the innings so far. Gill has batted at No. 3 only once, scoring 47 runs in the innings. Speaking to the broadcasters before the start of the first Test, the youngster said,
“They (Team management) asked me where I wanted to bat, and I said I wanted No. 3. It is a position where I want to consolidate.”
Batting at No. 3 is not very different than opening: Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill has played 17 Test matches for Team India. He has scored 921 runs at an average of 32.89, including two centuries and four fifties. He has been in great form across formats this year scoring five International centuries. Shubman Gill expressed that the experience of opening the batting for India in Test cricket will help him to succeed at the No. 3 spot.
“It is always good to play with the new ball. I have the experience with the new ball, and when you’re batting at No. 3, it is not very different although it is a little bit of a difference,” he added.
Team India bowled West Indies out for 150 runs in the first innings on Wednesday, July 12 at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up a five-wicket haul, while Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets. At the end of day one, India is placed well with 80 runs on the board with no loss. The openers are unbeaten with Yashasvi Jaiswal on 40, and Rohit Sharma on 30 runs.
