Wiaan Mulder Continues Playing Despite Heavily Bleeding Against Afghanistan

In the world of sports, tales of sheer determination and resilience often become legendary. One such moment unfolded during the 3rd match of the Champions Trophy 2025 when South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder showcased immense courage by staying on the field despite an injury. His actions exemplify the spirit of the game and the dedication athletes have toward their country.

The Incident: Wiaan Mulder’s Injury Against Afghanistan

During the heated clash against Afghanistan at the National Stadium Karachi, Wiaan Mulder, fielding near the boundary, made an aggressive dive to stop a crucial boundary. While he successfully halted the ball, the dive resulted in a severe laceration on his right arm, causing heavy bleeding.

Despite the injury, Mulder chose to stay on the field. With visible pain and blood trickling down his arm, he continued to field, rubbing the wound occasionally. His decision wasn’t driven by mere pride but by a deep sense of duty towards his team and country.

Mulder’s Performance Amidst Adversity

Before the injury, Mulder made a swift impact with the bat, scoring 12 runs off just six balls, including a boundary and a towering six, helping South Africa post a formidable total. Post-injury, Mulder returned to bowl, showcasing sheer grit. In his six-over spell, he conceded only 17 runs and claimed the crucial wicket of Afghanistan’s captain, Hashmatullah Shahid, for a duck. His economical bowling tightened South Africa’s grip on the game.

Filling Big Shoes in the Absence of Heinrich Klaasen

With star batter Heinrich Klaasen missing the match due to injury, Mulder’s role became even more critical. His all-round capabilities provided the balance South Africa desperately needed. Skipper Temba Bavuma heavily relies on players like Mulder, who showcase resilience and versatility. Mulder’s commitment serves as a morale booster for the entire squad.

Afghanistan’s Struggles During the Chase

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran fell early to Ngidi and Rabada, respectively. A run-out by Marco Jansen dismissed Sediqullah Atal for just 16, and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi was sent back for a duck by Wiaan Mulder. By the time they reached 50-4, chasing a hefty 316, Afghanistan was in deep trouble.

Rahmat Shah’s Brave Stand

Despite the early setbacks, Azmatullah Omarzai and Rahmat Shah tried to stabilize the innings. Omarzai’s 18 runs were a short-lived effort as he fell to Rabada, leaving Afghanistan at 89-5. Rahmat Shah put up a valiant fight, scoring a near run-a-ball 90, lifting Afghanistan from 89-5 to 208 all out.  Rabada’s 3-36, along with two wickets each from Ngidi and Mulder, secured a commanding 107-run victory for South Africa in their opening match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
