South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt has taken a page from Pat Cummins’ iconic 2023 World Cup moment as she prepares to face India in the Women’s ODI World Cup final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
Echoing Cummins’ memorable line, “Nothing more satisfying than hearing a big crowd go silent,” Wolvaardt expressed her desire to quiet the roaring home fans. “Hopefully we win. I guess that will silence them. Yeah,” she said with a smile during the pre-match press conference.
Cummins’ words came before Australia’s clash against India in the 2023 men’s final in Ahmedabad, where his side defeated the unbeaten hosts by six wickets to lift the trophy. Wolvaardt hopes to script a similar story — one where South Africa dethrones the in-form Indian side in front of a massive blue-clad crowd.
High Expectations for a Batting Feast
Following the high-scoring semifinal between India and Australia, which produced 679 runs in total, the South African skipper believes the final could also turn into a run-fest. The DY Patil pitch has been friendly for batters, setting the stage for another thrilling contest. Wolvaardt, however, emphasized the importance of composure under pressure.
“It’s going to be a really big crowd, probably the biggest crowd a lot of our girls have played in front of. A lot of eyeballs on the game, a lot of added pressure and probably pretty batting friendly,” she noted. “It may feel like there’s a lot happening tomorrow — the boundaries, the crowd, the noise — but I think we just need to stay as grounded as possible and focused on the moment.”
While she enjoys the batting conditions, Wolvaardt admitted that the flat wickets make things tougher for captains. Her approach focuses on remaining calm and executing the team’s plans despite the intensity of the occasion.
From a Nightmare Start to a Historic Final
South Africa’s campaign began on a disastrous note, bowled out for just 69 runs in their opening match against England. However, they bounced back remarkably to reach their first-ever World Cup final. Their revenge against England came in the semifinal, where Wolvaardt led with a brilliant 169 off 143 balls, while Marizanne Kapp’s fiery spell of 5/20 sealed a commanding 125-run win.
From early embarrassment to championship contention, Wolvaardt and her team have shown resilience and belief — setting up a grand finale that could define South African women’s cricket history.
