In the midst of the Ashes series, Australia’s captain Pat Cummins acknowledged that a number of people had forgotten about their World Test Championship (WTC) final match against India. The right-arm speedster added that the fight between India and New Zealand two years ago felt like a lost chance.
With 11 victories out of 19 tests, Australia finished first overall in the 2021–2023 WTC cycle. This year, they lost to India in a series, losing 2-1, and that was their only loss during that time.
Australia’s poor over rate in the MCG Test against India cost them a few points and prevented them from making the WTC final the previous time around.
When they saw India and New Zealand competing in the final in Southampton two years ago, according to Cummins, it finally hit them. The 29-year-old therefore wants to see Australia win the championship. The Age reported what he said as follows.
“India is playing in the World Test Championship final first, which I believe many people overlooked. Because we were so inexperienced, I believe it didn’t really sink in until after the game, when you saw how well New Zealand performed over there (in England), and you wished you were there. It seems like there is a little bit more on it the second time around. That first one seemed like a significant opportunity lost. Therefore, every series now has something significant to play for, adding a little bit more context. “
