Former India cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar feels India needs to develop bench strength for the future. He expressed that it is important to have a talented pool of players to perform well across formats at the international level. He also termed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad as “players for the future.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal was one of the best batters in the 2023 Indian Premier League this season. He won the Emerging Player award in the tournament. Ruturaj Gaikwad played a key role in the Chennai Super Kings’ title-winning campaign in the 2023 Indian Premier League season. With most of the Indian players in their mid-30s, Dilip Vengsarkar feels India needs to develop their bench strength.
“We need to develop our bench strength because that is very important. Unless you have bench strength, you cannot do well in any format. And I am sure we have tremendous talent in the country. In the next 10-15 years, we can do well,” said Dilip Vengsarkar to RevSportz.
“Yes, there are a lot of young talents coming up. Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of the players for the future. Ruturaj Gaikwad is another one. The selectors need to spot some fast bowlers and spinners who could win you matches, and that is very important,” he added.

Former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar further expressed that the selectors should back their instincts about a player. He added that India has a bright future in International cricket, with talented youngsters coming through the ranks. The former selector also stated that India reaching the World Test Championship final in two consecutive cycles is a “tremendous achievement”.
“Nobody is happy with the selection, as people feel X and Y should be there in the team. You cannot make everyone happy. Every selector has his viewpoint, and they go about it according to their instincts. But I am sure India has a very bright future with a lot of young talents coming up. It was a tremendous achievement by the team to reach the final of the World Test Championship, and I hope we will do better in future,” said Dilip Vengsarkar.
