Former England captain Alastair Cook jokingly suggested that India’s public statements about Jasprit Bumrah’s limited availability in the Test series might be a strategic bluff. While the Indian team management has clearly stated that Bumrah will only play three out of the five Tests due to workload management, some believe it could be a tactical move.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had addressed Bumrah’s workload concerns during the squad announcement, and both captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir have consistently maintained that stance throughout the tour. The possibility of Bumrah missing two Tests is undoubtedly encouraging for England, especially after their series-opening win at Headingley.

India now face a tough decision ahead of the second Test at Edgbaston—whether to play Jasprit Bumrah to avoid falling 0-2 behind or save him for the potentially more favourable conditions at Lord’s in the third Test. Michael Vaughan questioned why India revealed Bumrah’s availability instead of keeping it secret.

“Why are they announcing that their best bowler is only going to play 3 Tests?” Vaughan said on Stick to Cricket.

“Unless it is one of the greatest bluffs ever. You would rather play Bumrah at Lord’s wouldn’t you?” former England captain Cook replied.

India’s Pace Ace Bumrah Bowls 43.4 Overs in 1st Test vs England

The Indian fast bowler had to endure long spells in both innings of the high-scoring first Test at Headingley. While he claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings, he went wicketless in the second. This marked his heaviest workload in a Test since the Boxing Day match during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar series, where he bowled a total of 53 overs.

“I think for us to manage Bumrah’s workload is more important because there’s a lot of cricket going forward and we know that what he brings to the table as well.”

”So before he came on this tour, it was already decided that he’s going to play three Test matches, but let’s see how his body turns up. But we haven’t decided which two other Test matches he’s going to play,” Gambhir said after the first Test (via ICC).
