A promising cricketer was found dead in a Kolkata hospital after reportedly being drugged and murdered. Seventeen-year-old Deb Ghosh, from Hasnabad, about 70 kilometers from the city, had come to Kolkata on January 18 to play a cricket match.
According to The Times of India, Ghosh was allegedly attacked by a group of youths. His family, who discovered him at the hospital, claimed he was drugged and had his phone and wallet stolen. After being moved to another hospital, Ghosh passed away.
His family accused the police of failing to file a missing person report, despite approaching five stations in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas. They held a protest at SSKM hospital, alleging that both medical and police negligence contributed to Ghosh’s death.
In response, the police have sent Ghosh’s body for an autopsy and registered a case of unnatural death.
“Nobody informed us about what exactly occurred”- Mother Meena Ghosh
Ghosh’s parents claimed they received a call from Minakhan Rural Hospital at 7 am on Sunday, January 19, informing them that their son had been admitted. They said that although Deb was groggy, he managed to talk to them for a while.
“He was drowsy and told us he was taken by some men after he got off a bus at Science City. He was made to swallow a spiked drink before they took his wallet and phone,” his father Ujjwal was quoted as saying by the publication.
Doctors recommended transferring Ghosh to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where he was placed on oxygen and drips. However, the family claimed they were not informed about what happened next.
“Later, we learnt that he died. No one told us exactly what happened,” said his mother Meena.
Ghosh’s family said his grandmother was injured during protests at SSKM hospital, but the police denied the claim. A senior official stated they are investigating the allegation of police stations not filing a missing report.
