The tragic incident of an Air India crash on Thursday has rocked both the academic and sporting communities with the demise of a budding artificial intelligence scientist and a promising cricketer, Dirdh Patel, who died in the Air India crash at only 23 years old.
Less than a minute after the flight took off at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in a London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, 240 people were killed. One of the persons has survived the disastrous accident, and investigations by the authorities are continuing as the black box is being analyzed to determine what happened.
Dirdh Patel was a super personality and a student who had an outstanding talent in academics as well as sports. He is currently a graduate of the University of Huddersfield (MSc Artificial Intelligence with Distinction) and is originally based in Gujarat.
A tribute was made by his former professor, Dr. George Bargiannis, who referred to Patel as “a truly remarkable person of unique temperament who appealed simultaneously to his academic prowess and as a human.”
The Dirdh Patel Legacy
)
Patel loved cricket outside the classroom as much as he loved it inside. In 2024 he was signed by Leeds Modernians Cricket Club to play in the Airedale and Wharfedale Senior Cricket League as their overseas player. A reliable high school player and a well-liked team member, his arrival to the field was marked with talent as well as energy.
The spokesperson of the club said, “we are so devastated by the news.” Dirdh was a source of vigor, devotion, and team spirit to our team. He was not a mere sportsman but he was our family. We would like to send our thoughts to his family at this unspeakably hard time.
His death was a sad event that was felt around the league and even officials of the Airedale Wharfedale Senior Cricket League said that a minute of silence had been taken at Saturday and Sunday games.
Both Leeds Modernians and Pool Cricket Club, where Dirdh brother Krutik had played a game before, paid tributes to the young cricketer. Cricket fraternity is yet to digest the news and Patel will be remembered as a great talent who loved the game and served it with great devotion.
