3 Players That CSK Could Consider As Backup Options For MS Dhoni

While MS Dhoni has not officially retired, ongoing injuries might lead to his departure from CSK. The Chennai franchise may soon require capable players to step in.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) kept MS Dhoni for the IPL 2024 auction, bringing immense joy to CSK fans as their beloved ‘Thala’ is set to play another season in the IPL.

MS Dhoni had a tough time with fitness in IPL 2023, playing with a knee issue and undergoing surgery. Now, as he recovers, it’s uncertain how ready he’ll be for IPL 2024, given it’s the only cricket he plays in a year.

As the IPL 2024 auction approaches, CSK officials are contemplating the post-MS Dhoni era and are considering potential wicketkeeping options.

3 players CSK might consider as potential backups for MS Dhoni in the IPL 2024 auction are:

#1 Narayan Jagadeesan

Narayan Jagadeesan, known for his prolific scoring in domestic cricket, served as an understudy to MS Dhoni in CSK before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite a brief stint with KKR where he scored 89 runs in 6 matches, he has a solid wicketkeeping record.

Released by KKR for IPL 2024, Jagadeesan has a T20 track record of 1195 runs in 59 games, offering versatility as an opener or finisher. His familiarity with Dhoni from CSK days might aid a potential comeback to Chennai.

#2 Sam Billings

Sam Billings, having previously been with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), holds respectable IPL statistics, featuring in 30 matches, amassing 503 runs with a noteworthy strike rate of 130. His memorable 56 off 23 balls in IPL 2018 played a crucial role in CSK’s successful chase of 203 runs.

While his England commitments interrupted his IPL appearances, Billings, now excluded from England plans in all formats, becomes a potential target for CSK. Known for his excellent wicketkeeping, finishing skills, and leadership qualities, he could be a valuable asset post MS Dhoni’s retirement.

#3 KS Bharat

KS Bharat has been part of different IPL teams but didn’t get much playtime. He had a notable IPL 2021 with RCB, scoring 191 runs in 8 matches, but RCB released him. In IPL 2022, playing for Gujarat Titans, he faced tough competition and played only two matches.

With 1266 runs in 74 T20s, his strike rate is a bit low. However, he’s known for quick scoring and good wicketkeeping, making him a potential choice for CSK in the middle order, possibly replacing Ambati Rayudu.
