Ishan Porel, the right arm pacer from Bengal was touring with the Indian side to Sri Lanka as a net bowler. He was added to the Indian squad along with the other four players before the second T20I. Ishan is in contention to make his debut for India in the third T20I as Navdeep Saini injured himself in the last match.

The pacer has performed splendidly well in the domestic circuit. He was part of the Indian team in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. His brilliance in the semi-final against Pakistan was a key highlight of India’s title-winning campaign. Isha picked 4 wickets in 6 overs at an economy rate of 2.83.

He also took two wickets in the finals, helping India defeat Australia to win the championship. In 2021, he was picked up by the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League auction for his base price of INR 20 lakh.

Hails from a sporting family background

Ishan Porel was born in Hoogly, Kolkata on September 05, 1998. His father and grandfather both were professional Kabaddi players in their younger days. Subodh Chandra Porel, Ishan’s grandfather has represented India in the sport while Chandranath Porel, Ishan’s father played for the Bengal team.

Playing sports became a tradition in the family, which Ishan continued, though pursuing Cricket as his career.


Started his career as a batsman

Ishan began his cricketing journey at the National Sporting Club in his hometown and then came to Kolkata to attend a camp called ‘cricket clinic’. He started as a batsman, but looking at his height his coaches Pradip Mondal and Ashish De advised him to switch to fast bowling.

Ishan left his studies midway to join the Utpal Chatterjee Cricket Academy and play cricket professionally.


Made his first-class debut in 2017

Porel has represented Bengal in the U-16 and U-19 age groups as well as at the senior level. He made his List A debut in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy and went on to make his first-class debut in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy.

The pacer earned a call-up for Youth ODIs against England at home in 2017. He has bagged 61 FC wickets and 47 List A wickets so far in his career.


Magical spell in the Deodhar Trophy 2019 finals

Ishan played for India C under Shubhman Gill in the Deodhar Trophy 2019 season. In the finals, he bagged a five-wicket haul in his full quota of ten overs conceding 43 runs.

He dismissed crucial batsmen, the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Parthiv Patel, Nitish Rana, Kedhar Jadhav, and Vijay Shakar. Despite, India C losing the finals, Ishan Porel’s spell caught everyone’s attention.


Fan of Brett Lee and Dale Steyn

In an interview, Ishan revealed that Dale Steyn and Brett Lee are his cricketing Idols. He loves their aggression, bowling style, and passion for the game. Ishan also mentioned that watching the two world-class bowlers inspires him to bowl fearless irrespective of the conditions and situation.
