Arjuna Ranatunga the captain of 1996 World Cup held played a total of 93 test matches and 269 One day international matches. He made his test debut against England on 17th February 1982 and retired on 10th August 2000.

In ODI matches, he made his debut on 14th February 1982 against England and retired on 30th May 1999 against Kenya. His contributions to Sri Lankan cricket were immense to making the country a cricketing nation.

After retirement in cricket, he entered into politics in 2005. He held many posts including Sri Lanka Freedom Party and made into parliament from Colombo District in 2001 elections and was still 2010.

He was the Deputy Minister of Tourism from 2005-2008 and was president of Sri Lankan cricket till 2008.
