On Saturday, January 21, Joburg Super Kings skipper Faf du Plessis bowled out Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s Roelof van der Merwe in match 17 of the SA20 2023 at St. Georges Park in Gqeberha. The batter, as well as the viewers, were stunned by the Super Kings captain’s well-timed catch.
The spectacular incident occurred in Gerald Coetzee’s penultimate over of Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s innings. Van der Merwe attempted to smash one into the stands on the second delivery. However, he failed to time the ball well, and it appeared at one point that the mistimed no-look shot would just make it to the boundary on one bounce.
But that was not to be as Faf du Plessis, who never took his gaze off the ball, demonstrated great commitment by sprinting behind the ball as it travelled to the ropes and ended up taking a blinder after a full-fledged dive.
“That is absolutely outstanding as a catch. Faf du Plessis has shown what he can do with the ground fielding,” exclaimed Pommie Mbangwa on air. The video of Faf’s stupendous catch was posted by SA20 on its official Twitter account.
It was indeed an outstanding day on the field for the veteran South Africa batter who took a couple of catches and also effected the run out of Sarel Erwee.

Returning to the contest, du Plessis called it at the toss and chose to bowl first. His decision was correct, as his bowlers bowled brilliantly to dismiss the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for 127 runs in the penultimate over. For Super Kings, only Adam Rossington (40) showed some resistance with the bat.
In response, the Joburg Super Kings won a hard-fought five-wicket victory in the final over, ending the Sunrisers’ winning streak.
