The West Indies Cricket Team was penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate against Zimbabwe in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup Qualifiers on Saturday, June 24 at the Harare Sports Club in Harare. They suffered a disappointing defeat by 35 runs in the match, failing to chase down 268 runs.
West Indies was fined 60 per cent of their match fees by Muhammad Javed of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. The sanctions were imposed after the West Indies were ruled to be three overs short. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.
West Indies skipper Shai Hope accepted the offence and the proposed sanction by the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Hence, there was no need for a formal hearing. The on-field umpires Sam Nogajski and Ravindra Wimalasari, the third umpire Roland Black and the fourth umpire Allahudien Palekar levelled the charge.
West Indies qualifies for Super Six despite the loss
West Indies have qualified for the Super Six round of the ICC ODI World Cup Qualifier 2023. They are third on the Group A points table with two wins and a loss. They defeated the United States of America and Nepal in their opening two encounters. Recently, West Indies suffered a defeat against Zimbabwe. They bowled Zimbabwe out for 268 runs, but couldn’t chase down the target.
West Indies will take on the Netherlands in Match 18 of the Qualifiers on Monday, June 26 at the Takashinga Sports Club, Harare. Zimbabwe and Nepal became the other two teams from Group A to qualify for the Super Six round. Meanwhile, Nepal and the United States of America have been eliminated from the Qualifiers.
