One of the nine modifications to the initial schedule was the shifting of Pakistan‘s match against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad from October 10 to October 12. Only 10 days after ICC’s updated schedule for the 2023 ODI World Cup with nine changes, including moving the India-Pakistan match, the HCA requested BCCI for a fixture change.
This came less than a week before ticket sales were set to start for the tournament. However, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla swiftly rejected the request in a straightforward manner on Sunday. Among the nine modifications to the initial schedule, one included moving Pakistan’s match against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad from October 10 to 12.
This alteration resulted in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium hosting consecutive matches, with New Zealand facing the Netherlands on October 9.

However, due to security concerns raised by the Hyderabad police about these back-to-back games, the HCA requested a further change to the World Cup schedule, aiming to have at least a day’s gap between the two matches.
“I can’t say it would be changed for sure but back to back games are not ideal. I mean if they (BCCI) are reconsidering that will be well and good. We will have to work with security agencies. Anyone would want a day in between two World Cup games. We are still engaging with security agencies to see if it is possible or not. At the same time we are also keeping BCCI in the loop. The BCCI is completely aware of what we are trying to do,” stated an HCA representative, speaking anonymously.
Nevertheless, Shukla officially declined the request, stating that no additional alterations would be made to the World Cup schedule due to the involvement of various stakeholders. He also mentioned that as the person in charge of the Hyderabad venue, he would make efforts to address the issue.
“I am in charge of Hyderabad venue for WC. If there will be any issue or anything, will try to get it resolved. It is not easy to change the World Cup schedule and it’s unlikely to happen. Only BCCI can’t change schedule, teams, ICC, all involved,” said Shukla.
In total, Hyderabad is set to host three out of the 45 league matches in the World Cup, with the tournament opener featuring Pakistan against the Netherlands, a qualifying team.
