Virat Kohli played a significant role in India’s victory against Sri Lanka by contributing 88 runs and forming a strong partnership with Shubman Gill, who scored 92.
Virat Kohli had every reason to be delighted on Thursday as India’s cricket team secured a spot in the Cricket World Cup semi-finals with a commanding 302-run victory over Sri Lanka.
Kohli came close to matching Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of 49 ODI centuries but fell just 12 runs short. However, he still has more opportunities in the current Cricket World Cup to not only equal that milestone but also surpass it.
While fans at the Wankhede Stadium sang the song ‘My Name Is Lakhan’ from the movie ‘Ram Lakhan,’ Kohli added to the festive atmosphere by dancing along to the tune.

Kohli and Gill’s partnership laid India to score heavily against Sri Lanka, securing their spot in the semi-finals
Virat Kohli achieved a milestone by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs scored in a single year in the ODI format. However, he fell short of matching Sachin’s record for the most ODI centuries (49).
Kohli reached the 1,000-run mark in ODIs against Sri Lanka during the current World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. During his illustrious career, Virat Kohli achieved the feat of scoring over 1,000 runs in a single year on eight occasions, which occurred in the years 2011-14, 2017-19, and 2023.
In contrast, Sachin Tendulkar accomplished the same milestone in the ODI format seven times during the years 1994, 1996-98, 2000, 2003, and 2007. Kohli’s inning of 88 runs from 94 balls marked his 10th score of 50 or more in ODIs this year.
Shubman Gill holds the top spot with twelve such scores in 2023. Additionally, Virat’s significant performance against the Sri Lankan team was his 118th instance of scoring 50 or more runs in the ODI format.
Virat and Gill’s partnership of 189 runs ranks as India’s second-highest in World Cup matches against Sri Lanka. The top spot is held by Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly’s remarkable 318-run partnership at Taunton in 1999.
Virat came close to matching Sachin’s record of 49 ODI centuries but was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka’s slower delivery. He played the shot slightly early, directing it towards short cover, where Pathum Nissanka made a spectacular low diving catch.
