Delhi Capitals‘ head coach, Ricky Ponting, has shared a significant update on Rishabh Pant‘s readiness for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Ponting disclosed that the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has commenced his wicketkeeping training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, overcoming initial challenges, particularly the strain on his knees associated with this role.
Despite Pant gaining attention for his impressive batting in viral net practice videos, his journey has involved dedicated efforts to build momentum for the impending Indian Premier League. The National Cricket Academy has issued a match-fit certificate to Pant, granting him eligibility to participate in all IPL matches without intervention from the BCCI.
However, the Delhi Capitals remain cautious, given Pant’s history of injuries stemming from a harrowing car accident in December 2022. Ponting emphasized Pant’s commitment to achieving peak fitness levels, with continuous monitoring of his progress to ensure a gradual and sustainable return to top form.
While Pant’s batting prowess is no longer a cause for concern, Ponting expressed the team’s surprise at his recovery, initially anticipating his absence from IPL 2024. Ponting lauded Pant’s exceptional courage and dedication, highlighting the player’s remarkable ability to overcome adversities and reclaim his spot in the competitive cricket landscape.

Ricky Ponting remarked, “He’s actually played some practice matches over the last couple of weeks, which has been really encouraging for us. I know he’s worked incredibly hard on his body and his fitness to get back to the level that he’s at now. He’s kept in one of those games, he’s fielded in these games, and the batting hasn’t seemingly been an issue for him so far.”
Despite receiving a fit certificate, uncertainties persist within the Delhi Capitals camp regarding Pant’s ability to participate in all matches.
Ponting acknowledged this uncertainty, stating, “It’s a big decision we’ll have to make because if he is fit, you’d think he’d step straight back into that captaincy role. If he’s not entirely fit and we have to use him in a slightly different role, then we’ve got some decisions to make there.”
The careful consideration of Pant’s fitness underscores the team’s commitment to his well-being and long-term contributions to the squad.
