During practice before Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) IPL 2024 match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday, May 5, CSK batsman Daryl Mitchell accidentally shattered a fan’s iPhone.
Mitchell was facing throwdowns near the boundary in the afternoon to prepare for the game, with nets set up to prevent balls from reaching the stands. Unfortunately, one shot went over the nets and struck a fan’s iPhone in the crowd, leaving a significant crack.
As compensation, the fan received a pair of Mitchell’s batting gloves. A video of the incident, shared by a CSK supporter on X, quickly went viral on social media.

CSK secured a 28-run victory over PBKS at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, successfully defending a target of 168 runs. Mitchell contributed 30 runs off 19 balls in the match before being dismissed LBW by Harshal Patel.
Daryl Mitchell displayed visible frustration after being dismissed following a tight LBW decision in the PBKS vs CSK match
Daryl Mitchell showed excellent form with the bat against PBKS, entering the crease at No. 3 after CSK opener Ajinjya Rahane’s early dismissal. Mitchell and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad built a vital 57-run partnership to stabilize the innings for their team.
However, Mitchell’s innings came to an end in the ninth over due to a tight LBW decision. The dismissal occurred off a length delivery from right-arm pacer Harshal Patel, which angled into Mitchell.
The lack of bounce deceived the batsman, resulting in him being struck on the pads. The on-field umpire ruled it out, but the New Zealand batsman chose to review the decision.
However, the DRS upheld the umpire’s call, as ball tracking indicated that the ball would have marginally clipped the leg stump. Mitchell had to accept the decision and depart. He appeared visibly upset, shaking his head in disappointment as he left the field.
