The Indian women’s cricket team is set to embark on a highly anticipated ODI series against Australia in December 2024. The squad announcement came with surprises, including Shafali Verma’s omission due to a lackluster performance, while wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh makes her return after missing the New Zealand series. With fresh faces and a mix of seasoned campaigners, this series holds immense importance for India’s preparations ahead of the 2025 World Cup.

Shafali Verma’s Omission

Shafali Verma, once regarded as a cornerstone of India’s batting line-up, has struggled to adapt to the 50-over format. In her absence, Yastika Bhatia is likely to open alongside Smriti Mandhana, with Priya Punia vying for the No. 3 position.

Richa Ghosh is back in the squad after missing the New Zealand ODIs due to her board exams. Known for her aggressive batting and sharp wicketkeeping skills, Richa’s return boosts India’s middle order.

New Call-Ups to the Squad

After a brief stint in the South Africa series earlier this year, Priya Punia returns to the squad. Though she didn’t shine during the India A tour of Australia in August, her domestic performances earned her another shot.

Having last played an ODI against Australia in 2023, Harleen Deol brings experience to the middle order. With two fifties in her limited appearances, she aims to solidify her place in the squad.

Minnu Mani and Titas Sadhu, primarily known for their T20 exploits, have been called up for the ODIs. While Sadhu will back up Renuka Singh and Arundhati Reddy in the pace department, Minnu adds variety to India’s spin options.

Players Retained from the New Zealand Series

The selectors showed faith in middle-order batter Tejal Hasabnis, legspinner Priya Mishra, and pacer Saima Thakor. These players debuted during the New Zealand series and impressed with their potential, earning a place in the squad for the Australia tour.

The three ODIs in Brisbane and Perth are part of the ICC Women’s Championship. While India has already qualified for the 2025 World Cup as hosts, this series serves as an opportunity to fine-tune strategies against one of the world’s best teams.

Australia enters the series on the back of a 2-1 win against Bangladesh in March. With star players like Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy in their ranks, they remain a formidable opponent.
