India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill showcased his prowess as he led India to a four-wicket win over England in the 1st ODI in Nagpur on Thursday. Chasing a modest target of 249, Gill played a crucial role, scoring a composed 83 off 96 balls to help India achieve the total with 11.2 overs to spare.
Gill’s Match-Winning Performance
Gill partnered effectively with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel to stabilize the innings after early setbacks. His 94-run stand with Iyer (59) and a subsequent 108-run partnership with Axar Patel (52) ensured a smooth chase for India. Openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal fell early, but Gill’s resilience kept the momentum going.
Suresh Raina’s Lighthearted Moment with Gill
After the match, former India cricketer Suresh Raina playfully teased Gill with a Valentine’s Day remark. “Maine kaha Valentine’s Day to 14th ko hai, tune aaj fir dil jeet liya (Valentine’s Day is on 14 February, but you already won hearts today),” Raina said.
A blushing Gill simply replied, “Thank you.”

England’s Late Fightback
Despite Gill’s solid knock, England tried to make a late comeback, with pacer Saqib Mahmood dismissing him on 83 with a mistimed pull to mid-on. Mahmood and spinner Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each to give England some late positives.
Post-Match Reactions
After the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of regrouping and adapting to the format after a long break.
“Pretty happy because we knew we were coming after a long time to this format. We wanted to quickly regroup and understand what is to be done,” Rohit said.
Rohit added, “Nothing specific, overall as a team I want to make sure we keep on doing the right things. Try and tick every box there is to be ticked in bowling and batting.”
Jos Buttler on England’s Struggles
England captain Jos Buttler admitted that they were short of 40-50 runs to set up a competitive total.
“I think Salt and Duckett came out and played brilliantly in that powerplay, put the opposition under a lot of pressure. But an unfortunate run-out changed the momentum, and we lost four wickets quite quickly, which set us back,” Buttler remarked.

The second ODI is set to take place in Cuttack on Sunday, with Virat Kohli likely to return after missing the first game due to a sore knee. Both teams are preparing for the upcoming Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE, where India will play all their matches.
