Ajinkya Rahane marked his 200th first-class appearance in style, scoring a match-defining century against Haryana in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Rahane, who was unbeaten on 88 overnight, reached his 29th first-class century in the morning session of February 11. His stellar knock of 108 was a pivotal contribution, extending Mumbai’s lead beyond 300 runs, effectively securing their place in the semi-final.
Consistency and Leadership in Mumbai’s Recovery
Rahane’s century was the highlight of Mumbai’s second innings, following a poor first innings performance. Mumbai’s top order had struggled, with Rahane’s 31 being the only significant score.
However, Rahane’s leadership and solid batting, supported by Suryakumar Yadav’s 70, Shivam Dube’s 48, and contributions from Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian, helped Mumbai recover from a precarious position of 113 for 7 to finish with 315 runs. Rahane’s 108 came off 180 balls, including 13 boundaries, marking his first century of the ongoing season.
A Strong Domestic Presence and IPL Future
In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, Rahane has accumulated 437 runs in 12 innings, including one century and two fifties. Despite not featuring in India’s Test squad since July 2023, Rahane has remained a consistent performer in domestic cricket.
Earlier, he impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, scoring 469 runs in nine matches at an average of 58.62 and a strike rate of 164.56. Rahane, who represented Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 and 2024 IPL seasons, will return to Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2025 season, furthering his impressive cricketing journey.
Rahane’s performance in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final not only underscored his class and experience but also reaffirmed his ability to deliver in crucial moments. His leadership and consistency continue to make him a vital asset in domestic cricket, even as he eyes a potential comeback on the international stage.
With the IPL 2025 season on the horizon, his recent form suggests he could play a key role for Kolkata Knight Riders, proving that his passion for the game and hunger for success remain as strong as ever.
