India’s star batter, Virat Kohli, had a narrow escape after a misunderstanding with Shubman Gill during the third ODI against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 12. Attempting a quick single in the seventh over of the first innings, Kohli was forced to turn back just in time after Gill signaled him to stay.
Kohli arrived at the crease following Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in the second over. From there, he and Gill carefully navigated the early spell from Saqib Mahmood and Mark Wood, ensuring steady progress during the powerplay. The duo struck boundaries consistently while rotating the strike to build a solid stand.
On the first ball of the seventh over, Kohli pushed a delivery from Mahmood straight down the ground and instinctively set off for a quick single. However, Gill, who had his eyes on the ball, promptly realized the danger and called Kohli back, preventing a potential run-out.
Kohli swiftly turned back toward his crease following Gill’s decisive call. The fielder at mid-on reacted quickly, collecting the ball efficiently but delivering a weak throw to the wicketkeeper. The ball reached Phil Salt’s gloves just as Kohli made it safely across the crease.
Although Salt attempted the run-out, replays confirmed that Kohli was well inside the line. A direct hit could have put him in serious trouble, but luck favoured the star batter on this occasion. You can watch the video here:

Off-spinner Joe Root has already been introduced into the attack, with Adil Rashid likely to follow soon. At the moment, Team India stands at 62/1 after 11 overs. Kohli is on 26 runs from 30 balls, while Gill has scored 29 off 34 deliveries.
