Varun Chakravarthy has emerged as a game-changer for India in the Champions Trophy, stunning opponents with his deceptive spin. In just his second ODI appearance and his first Champions Trophy outing, he delivered a mesmerizing five-wicket haul against New Zealand, dismantling their batting order and breaking their winning streak. His unpredictable bowling style has raised concerns in the Kiwi camp, prompting head coach Gary Stead to acknowledge the challenge his team faces.
Stead emphasized the need for a strategy to counter Varun’s mystery spin, particularly under stadium lights, where picking his deliveries becomes even more challenging. “He is a class bowler and a big threat in the game,” Stead admitted, adding that New Zealand would analyze ways to neutralize him while maintaining their scoring momentum.
Matt Henry’s Injury Concerns Loom Over Final
New Zealand’s preparations for the final have been further complicated by the uncertain fitness of their pace spearhead, Matt Henry. The seamer, who impressed with a five-wicket haul against India, suffered a shoulder injury while attempting a catch in a previous match.
Despite returning to bowl a couple of overs against South Africa, doubts remain over his availability for the crucial clash. “The positive thing is he managed to bowl again, but we are still waiting on his recovery,” Stead explained. The team has conducted medical scans, and while they are hopeful, his participation in the final remains undecided. His absence would be a major setback for New Zealand, given his ability to generate early breakthroughs and contain the opposition in the death overs.
India’s Spin-Heavy Strategy and Rachin Ravindra’s Key Role
India’s decision to adopt a spin-heavy attack has proven to be a tactical masterstroke. Initially opting for just two seamers in their early games, they later replaced Harshit Rana with Varun, forming a four-pronged spin attack. This move has yielded significant success, particularly against Australia in the semi-final.
With the final approaching, India is likely to stick with the same strategy. Stead acknowledged the challenge posed by India’s strong spin unit but expressed confidence in New Zealand’s ability to adapt. Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra has been instrumental in New Zealand’s campaign, amassing 226 runs, including two centuries.
However, his performances against India have been relatively modest, with only 94 runs in three matches. The young star will be eager to turn the tide and make a match-winning contribution in the final. Stead lauded Ravindra’s all-round abilities, stating, “He is an important player for us and is looking forward to the big game.”
