The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set for the 3rd match with an electrifying contest between two of the league’s most celebrated teams—Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, MI fans were handed a surprise when it was announced that Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the team in their season opener, as regular captain Hardik Pandya serves a one-match suspension.

Hardik Pandya’s One-Match Ban

Hardik Pandya, who returned to Mumbai Indians as captain for the 2024 season, has to sit out the first match due to a penalty imposed for a slow over-rate violation in the previous IPL edition. This leaves a leadership void that Suryakumar Yadav will be filling, at least for the opening clash.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Thoughts on the Captaincy

Given his experience as India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav’s appointment as MI’s stand-in captain is a logical choice. His aggressive mindset and innovative batting style have made him a standout player, and his leadership skills have been recognized at the international level. Though Rohit Sharma is no longer MI’s official captain, his presence remains invaluable. Having led the team to five IPL titles, he will undoubtedly provide crucial guidance to Suryakumar in his captaincy debut.

Surya’s plan for MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the legend of Indian cricket, continues to be a source of admiration and inspiration for players across generations. Reflecting on Dhoni’s influence, SKY expressed his excitement and respect for the iconic figure ahead of their upcoming match, acknowledging the invaluable lessons learned from the former skipper over the years.

Surya expressed excitement about leading MI. When asked about controlling the “uncapped player” MS Dhoni, he humorously responded, “Has anyone been able to control him for so many years? We have learned so much from him and still do.”

Mumbai Indians’ Batting Lineup

Suryakumar Yadav hinted at a flexible batting order, meaning fans may see different combinations throughout the season. He also emphasized giving opportunities to younger players like Tilak Varma. Surya had sacrificed his No. 3 spot for Tilak Varma in the Indian team. However, he suggested that he might return to his preferred position, depending on the team’s strategy.

Surya stated, “It’s always good to have that impact at the top. And I have seen that guy (Tilak), he has been working really hard. So for team India, I thought it will be better if he can bat number 3 and I can take the responsibility at number 4. Because for me, batting number doesn’t matter. I bat the same way, try and make that impact whenever there is an opportunity and so does he (Tilak).”

Suryakumar Yadav on His Own Form

Acknowledging his inconsistent performances last season, Surya emphasized his process-oriented approach and confidence in regaining his best form. With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, Surya revealed that he is closely watching Indian players to identify potential national team candidates.

Surya added, “With the form, the harder you work, the luckier you get. If it has to come, it will come any time. But I am actually a process-oriented man. I love to work hard in the nets. And if the runs have to follow, it will follow quickly. Some day or the other.”
