Rohit Sharma is among the few cricketers who have featured in every IPL season since its inception. Despite his longevity, he has crossed the 400-run mark only eight times in 18 editions. His best season came in 2013 when he amassed 538 runs at an average of 38.42 and a strike rate of 131.54, leading Mumbai Indians to their maiden title.
The veteran batter has had a rough start in IPL 2025, managing just eight runs in two matches. He was dismissed for a duck against Chennai Super Kings and showed early aggression against Gujarat Titans before being bowled by Mohammed Siraj. Rohit’s sluggish start isn’t surprising, given his underwhelming performances in the last five seasons.
Since 2020, he has surpassed 400 runs only once—last season when MI finished last. His IPL scores over the past five editions read: 332 (2020), 381 (2021), 268 (2022), 332 (2023), and 417 (2024). Notably, his 2024 tally was boosted by a century against CSK at Wankhede.
Rohit’s fluctuating form in international cricket
Rohit Sharma’s batting form has been inconsistent since the home Test series against New Zealand last year. In Test cricket, he has struggled, looking far from his best. His dip in form led to him stepping down from the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney.
However, the Indian captain regained his touch with a century in the second ODI against England. He also provided strong starts in the Champions Trophy, playing a crucial 76-run knock on a challenging Dubai pitch in the final against New Zealand to secure India’s title win.
Mumbai Indians, five-time IPL champions, urgently need Rohit to return to form. Their struggles at the top order have impacted their performances, making it difficult for them to secure wins. Following MI’s defeat to Gujarat Titans, captain Hardik Pandya urged his batters to take greater responsibility and perform better. Speaking to the host broadcaster, he stated:
“Right now, everyone needs to step up. It’s still early in the tournament. The batters need to deliver, and hopefully, they will soon.”
