IPL 2025 Restarts Amid Uncertainty Over Key Foreign Players

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to resume on May 17 after being suspended due to rising border tensions with Pakistan. With a ceasefire agreement now in place between the two nations, the tournament will continue, and the final will be held on June 3 instead of May 25.

This change has raised concerns over the availability of foreign players, as several international series are scheduled around the same time. England and the West Indies will play a white-ball series, while Australia and South Africa will compete in the World Test Championship final shortly after the IPL final. These events may impact player participation, making franchise planning more complicated.

Team-wise Updates on Foreign Player Availability

Punjab Kings have confirmation on the return of Xavier Bartlett, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mitchell Owen, but it is still unclear if Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Josh Inglis, and Aaron Hardie will be available. RCB may face challenges, as four players—Josh Hazlewood, Jacob Bethell, Romario Shepherd, and Lungi Ngidi—have international duties.

However, Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone are not part of England’s white-ball squad, so they might be available. Mumbai Indians are expected to retain most of their overseas players, though Will Jacks and Corbin Bosch might miss the playoffs. Mujeeb-ur-Rahman remains available. For the Gujarat Titans, most players stayed back in India, except Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee. The availability of Buttler, Kagiso Rabada, and Sherfane Rutherford depends on their NOCs.

Franchise Strategies and Remaining Squad Decisions

SRH, already out of playoff contention, will see the return of Pat Cummins and Travis Head, with Heinrich Klaasen also expected. Still, there is no confirmation regarding Eshan Malinga, Kamindu Mendis, and Wiaan Mulder. CSK expects the return of Noor Ahmad, Dewald Brewis, Matheesha Pathirana, and Devon Conway. Rachin Ravindra’s status remains uncertain, while Sam Curran is likely to rejoin, and Jamie Overton may miss out.

For Delhi Capitals, Mitchell Starc is likely to miss the remainder of the season, and Jake Fraser-McGurk’s return is still unclear. The rest of the foreign players are expected to return. KKR’s squad will likely include Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Rovman Powell, Quinton de Kock, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, but Moeen Ali and Spencer Johnson’s status is unclear. LSG will miss Aiden Markram, but all others should return. Rajasthan Royals, already out of playoff contention, might not see their overseas players return.
