Court Orders Cricketer Mohammed Shami To Pay ₹4 Lakh Alimony To Former Wife

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has encountered a major legal blow, as the Calcutta High Court has directed him to pay ₹4 lakh per month in alimony to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. The ruling, passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, mandates ₹1.5 lakh for Jahan’s personal maintenance and ₹2.5 lakh towards the upbringing and expenses of their minor daughter.

This decision comes after Jahan challenged a 2018 verdict from the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which had previously ordered Shami to pay ₹50,000 monthly for her support and an additional ₹80,000 for their daughter’s needs. At the time, Jahan had demanded ₹10 lakh per month, ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for their daughter, but the lower court had rejected her plea.

During the appeal, Jahan’s lawyer argued that Shami’s financial position justified a higher alimony. His income tax filings for the 2021 financial year reportedly showed an annual income of ₹7.19 crore, translating to about ₹60 lakh per month. Jahan also stated that her combined monthly expenses, including those for her daughter, exceeded ₹6 lakh.

High Court Favors Hasin Jahan; Shami May Offer Extra Support For Daughter

Taking all details into account, the High Court ruled in Hasin Jahan’s favour. Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee stated that a monthly payment of ₹1.5 lakh to the wife and ₹2.5 lakh for the daughter would be fair and reasonable to ensure their financial security. The court also noted that Shami may voluntarily offer additional support for his daughter’s education or future needs.

The High Court raised concerns about the reasoning behind the previous verdict, pointing out that the Alipore Court had not clearly explained why it had awarded much lower amounts. The revised ruling emphasized the need to amend the earlier judgment, especially in light of Shami’s high income and the fact that Jahan remains unmarried and solely responsible for raising their daughter.

Hasin Jahan, a former model and ex-cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders, married Mohammed Shami in 2014. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2015. However, their relationship deteriorated in 2018 when Jahan accused Shami of domestic abuse, dowry-related harassment, and even match-fixing. She further claimed that he had stopped financially supporting the family.
