Jasprit Bumrah Becomes India’s Top Test Wicket-Taker In England

Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, had a quiet start on the fourth day of the ongoing Test at Lord’s. But in the final session, he struck decisively.

With England’s innings nearing its end, Bumrah delivered a stunning yorker to dismiss Brydon Carse on the very first ball of the 56th over. Just two overs later, he clean bowled Chris Woakes on the third delivery of the 58th.

While Carse managed only 1 run, Woakes put up a slight resistance with 10 runs from 33 balls, including a boundary. These two wickets not only helped India edge closer to victory but also etched Bumrah’s name into Indian cricket history.

India’s Best in England: Bumrah Rises to the Top

With these dismissals, Bumrah reached 49 wickets in Test matches against England in England, surpassing veteran Ishant Sharma’s 48. Bumrah achieved this feat in just 10 matches, while Ishant took 14 games.

Bumrah’s best bowling figures on English soil stand at 5/64, which adds to his dominance. Other Indian bowlers who have excelled in England include legends like Kapil Dev (43 wickets in 13 matches), Anil Kumble (36 wickets in 10 matches), and Bishan Singh Bedi (35 wickets in 12 matches).

Notably, Ishant’s best individual bowling performance remains an impressive 7/74 during the 2014 Lord’s Test, which remains one of India’s most memorable bowling efforts in England.

Overall Test Wickets in England: Bumrah in Elite Company

While Jasprit Bumrah leads the chart for most wickets against England in England, Ishant Sharma still holds the overall record for most wickets by an Indian in England.

Including a match against New Zealand in the 2021 World Test Championship (WTC) final at Southampton, where he claimed three wickets, Ishant’s total tally stands at 51 wickets from 15 matches.

Bumrah, having played one less match (11), stands at 49. Following them are Kapil Dev with 43, Mohammed Shami with 42 from 14 matches, Anil Kumble with 36, and Mohammed Siraj, who has already taken 36 wickets in just nine matches.

Bumrah’s WTC Appearances, A Mixed Journey

2021 WTC Final (India vs New Zealand) : Bumrah featured in the final but went wicketless, which was a surprising outcome given his usual effectiveness.

2023 WTC Final (India vs Australia) : This match, held at The Oval, took place from June 7 to 11, 2023. Bumrah was absent due to a back injury, a crucial blow to India’s bowling attack in that high-stakes game.
