ENG vs IND: Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes DRS After Joe Root Survives Lbw Appeal

Sunil Gavaskar was furious after Joe Root’s lucky escape in the third Test match.  In the first innings, Root scored 104 runs off 199 balls. He was batting excellently in the 2nd innings, and Mohammed Siraj got him in trouble.

Giving the ball, Siraj then bowled a ball that moved into Root sharply, which prompted him to shuffle across to play his shot. But the ball had caught the inside edging and hit him on the pads in front of the middle stump. Paul Reiffel, the umpire, did not put his finger up, and India checked the decision. It was ball-tracking that indicated that the ball was going to rattle the leg stump.

The decision by the umpire to save Root and Mohammed Siraj was irked when the replay was on. He put an on-field umpire in a death stare as Gavaskar also echoed the message, saying that Root had a lucky escape. The moment raised eyebrows, and most people considered the umpire’s decision to be negative. The luck that Root has might turn into a critical aspect in the game.

“You’re saying it was going to kiss the leg stump?”- Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar was aggressive in his evaluation, casting doubt over the DRS technology following a close incident involving Joe Root, saying he felt the umpire should not have overturned the obvious evidence shown in ball-tracking that the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps, raising concerns as to the level the technology is being applied.

“You’re saying it was going to kiss the leg stump? There’s no way. It was knocking the leg stump off. The only good thing is that India have not lost the review,” Gavaskar said, as quoted by India Today.

England’s impressive bowling in the third Test at Lord’s, London, put India in trouble, despite India’s initial lead. Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer took wickets, while KL Rahul showed resilience. Both India and England scored 387 each in their first innings.
