Joe Root made his name in history by joining the list of a group of four batsmen in the history of Test cricket to represent 8000-plus runs in Test cricket, batting at number four. The ex-England captain achieved the feat on the fourth day of the third test match with India at Lord’s Cricket Ground, London. Other players who have done this other than Sachin Tendulkar, Mahela Jayawardene, and Jacques Kallis are all dead.

During lunch on Day 4, Root had 8009 runs to his name at No. 4 in 170 innings and 99 Test matches with an average of 51.67, with 25 centuries and 37 half-centuries to his credit. Such a remarkable feat is a testament to Root’s consistency and ability as a batsman.

Tendulkar is the only batter to have more than 10,000 runs in the position among the elite players, and in 179 matches, he has scored 13,492 runs with 44 centuries and 58 half-centuries. Root has achieved this feat more impressively, given that he has gotten it in fewer matches than Tendulkar and Jayawardene.

There are 8 and above 8 000 Test runs at No.4 and these include Sachin Tendulkar (India) – Matches: 179, Runs: 13,492, Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – Matches: 124, Runs: 9,509, Jacques Kallis (South Africa) – Matches: 111, Runs: 9,033, and Joe Root (England) – Matches: 99, Runs: Other prominent figures such as Virat Kohli and Brian Lara have had excellent run tallies in the 4th position as well.

Root scored another glorious chapter to his Test career earlier on Day 2 at Lord s. The English veteran scored his 37th Test century, which is more than Rahul Dravid had amassed with 36, to take up the 5th place on the highest number of centuries in Test matches. He completed his century in 192 balls that demonstrated his maturity and fighting qualities against the tough pitch.
