Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj maintained his impressive rhythm in the opening session of the first Test against West Indies, striking again to dismiss Alick Athanaze for 12 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 2. The pacer, in red-hot form with the new ball, picked up three wickets within the first hour of play.

Siraj started his spell with back-to-back maiden overs, one of which saw him remove opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul. He then produced a brilliant incoming scrambled-seam delivery in the 10th over to rattle Brandon King’s middle stump. In the very next over, Siraj adjusted his angle to go around the wicket against Athanaze.

The move paid off instantly, as the left-hander attempted a booming drive to a full delivery outside off stump. The thick outside edge flew towards the slips, where KL Rahul completed a sharp catch at third slip. You can watch the video here:

At this stage, West Indies are struggling at 55 for 4 after 16 overs. India captain Shubman Gill has brought in Nitish Kumar Reddy as the third seamer from one end, while Jasprit Bumrah finishes his opening spell with impressive figures of 1-14 from six overs.

Fresh from representing India ‘A’ against Australia ‘A’ in an unofficial Test in Lucknow, Mohammed Siraj has seized the opportunity on Ahmedabad’s green pitch to launch India’s home season. Leading the pace attack, he capitalized on the conditions after West Indies captain Roston Chase elected to bat first.

After bowling seven consecutive overs, Siraj was taken off, having delivered three crucial strikes that left the West Indies reeling. Vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja was brought into the attack, introducing spin for the first time in the match.
