Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel credited former India captain MS Dhonifor inspiring his sharp glovework after executing a brilliant stumping during a Ranji Trophy 2025fixture. Representing Gujarat, Urvil displayed remarkable awareness to dismiss Shahbaz Ahmed in their recent clash against Bengal at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The incident occurred in the 43rd over of Bengal’s second innings when Shahbaz attempted to steer left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai’s delivery towards the off side but missed. Urvil calmly collected the ball, waited for Shahbaz’s back foot to lift, and swiftly dislodged the bails.
The Bengal batter was dismissed for 20 off 15 balls, a wicket that highlighted the Gujarat keeper’s alertness and presence of mind. Hinting that he picked up such wicketkeeping skills from MS Dhoni, Urvil mentioned on Instagram:
“Didn’t learn from books… Learnt from the legend himself — Thala ⚡🧤.”

Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi reacted to the post, affectionately referring to Urvil as “Junior Thala.”
It’s noteworthy that MS Dhoni had executed a similar stumping to dismiss Sabbir Rahman during India’s 2016 T20 World Cup clash against Bangladesh at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, Urvil received widespread appreciation for his impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy 2025 clash. Chasing a tough target of 327 runs in the fourth innings, Gujarat struggled to build partnerships, but Urvil stood firm as the team’s lone fighter.
The 27-year-old displayed great resilience, remaining unbeaten on 109 off 124 deliveries, even as Gujarat were eventually dismissed for 185.
Urvil Patel featured for CSK under MS Dhoni’s leadership in IPL 2025
Urvil Patel was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), sharing the dressing room with MS Dhoni. Initially going unsold at the auction, he was later signed by the franchise as an injury replacement for Vansh Bedi. Urvil made 68 runs in three innings, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 212.50.
MS Dhoni resumed captaincy duties after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined with an elbow injury following five matches. Despite Dhoni’s return, the five-time champions endured a disappointing campaign, ending at the bottom of the standings with only four wins from 14 games.
