In a surprising turn of events, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached assets worth INR 11.14 crore belonging to Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina on Thursday, November 6, as part of a money laundering investigation. As reported by the Times of India, these assets are being examined for potential links to the betting platform 1xBet, which has been accused of defrauding users and evading significant tax liabilities.
While Raina was questioned for over eight hours regarding his promotional association with the platform, Dhawan has not yet appeared before the ED. His response will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This action forms part of a wider crackdown by the Indian authorities targeting illegal betting applications across the country.
Shikhar Dhawan, who made his mark as an opener, represented India in 167 ODIs, 34 Tests, and 68 T20Is, with his last appearance coming in an ODI in 2022 before retiring. Suresh Raina, another left-handed batter, featured in 226 ODIs, 18 Tests, and 78 T20Is for the national team, last playing a 50-over match against England in July 2018.
