“Take Those Chances”- Shastri’s Risky Blueprint For India’s Survival

South Africa ended the second day of the Guwahati Test firmly in control, capitalizing on a pitch that heavily favoured batting throughout the opening sessions. Playing on a surface that offered little assistance to bowlers, the Proteas constructed a formidable total of 489.

Senuran Muthusamy was the star of the innings, scoring his maiden international century with a composed 109, while Marco Jansen narrowly missed his hundred after falling for an impressive 93. India, needing a strong start to stay competitive, reached 9 without loss at stumps, still trailing by a massive 480 runs. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul ended the day unbeaten on 7 and 2, respectively, leaving India with a mountain to climb.

India Under Pressure In A Must-Win Situation

The pressure on India is immense heading into the third day, especially with the hosts trailing 1-0 in the two-match series. After being comprehensively beaten by South Africa in the first Test by 30 runs—largely due to the visitors’ superior performance with spin—the Indian side must engineer a turnaround to avoid a series defeat.

The challenge is not just overcoming South Africa’s first-innings total but also doing so with enough time left in the match to force a result. With the pitch still favourable for batting and the match progressing quickly, strategic decisions will play a crucial role for India. Rishabh Pant and the leadership group must consider how to balance the need for runs with the urgency to take 20 wickets.

Ravi Shastri Suggests An Aggressive Declaration Strategy

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri shared a bold tactical suggestion during commentary, urging India to take an unconventional but potentially match-winning risk. Observing the time-sensitive nature of the contest and the lifeless pitch, he advised the hosts to consider declaring even before matching South Africa’s total.

According to him, “Tactically, India will have to take a call tomorrow (Monday). See how they get through the new ball, and then take the game forward, and force a win in this Test match. They’ll have to call the shots, which means you might even want to declare behind. Then try and bowl out the opposition quickly in the second innings.”

Emphasising the importance of being proactive rather than defensive, he added, “You’ve got to take those chances. You can’t wait to bat and go past 489; that’ll take a long time. Might have to even declare 80, 90, 100 runs behind and see how it goes.” Shastri believes such an approach may be India’s best opportunity to push for a result in a match where time and pitch conditions could otherwise blunt their chances.
