Former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie revealed that feeling repeatedly “humiliated” by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was the primary reason behind his decision to step down as Pakistan’s Test coach. Gillespie, who resigned only eight months into the role, said the way decisions were taken without consulting him made his position untenable.
Speaking during a Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter), he admitted that certain actions crossed professional boundaries, calling them “unacceptable.” The former fast bowler made it clear that mutual respect and transparency were missing, which ultimately eroded his trust in the system and forced him to walk away despite his commitment to the role.
Sacking of Support Staff Sparks Fallout
One of the major flashpoints during Gillespie’s short tenure was the sudden removal of senior assistant coach Tim Nielsen. Gillespie disclosed that Nielsen was dismissed by the PCB without any prior discussion with him, even though he was the head coach.
He described the episode as deeply disrespectful, stating that being kept in the dark over such a critical decision left him feeling sidelined. “That was one of the moments where I felt completely humiliated,” Gillespie said, adding that decisions affecting the team environment should never be taken behind the head coach’s back. This incident became symbolic of a wider communication gap between Gillespie and the PCB hierarchy.
Mixed Results and Growing Frustration
On the field, Gillespie’s tenure delivered mixed outcomes. Pakistan suffered a disappointing 2–0 Test series defeat to Bangladesh, which increased scrutiny around the team. However, there was also a significant high point when Pakistan registered a 2–1 Test series victory over England at home, a result that highlighted the team’s potential under his guidance. Despite this success, Gillespie hinted that off-field issues overshadowed the positives.
He had also earlier criticised PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi for not attending an important team event, suggesting a lack of engagement from the top. In the end, Gillespie concluded that continuing under such circumstances was not viable, reinforcing that respect and clear communication are non-negotiable for any coaching role at the international level.
