Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of Team India, responded to a congratulatory message from former captain MS Dhoni after India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The Men in Blue retained their title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.
Dhoni was present at the venue to witness the summit clash. Following India’s impressive win, the two-time World Cup-winning captain shared an emotional message for the team on Instagram, also making a special mention of Gambhir’s smile in his post. He wrote:
“History gets created at Ahmedabad, big congratulations to the team and support staff and to all the fans of Indian Cricket Team worldwide.such a pleasure to see all of u play.Coach Sahab smile looks great on u,intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done.enjoy guys(BUMRAH ke baare mein kuch na likhoon tou hi acha hai.CHAMPION BOWLER).”

In response to Dhoni’s post, Gambhir left a comment saying:
“And what a reason to smile, great seeing u!”

It is worth noting that Gambhir boasts an impressive record in ICC tournaments as both a player and a coach, along with significant success in the Indian Premier League. As a player, he played a key role in India’s triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.
In addition to guiding the team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, his tenure as head coach has also seen India lift the Champions Trophy in 2025.
“No milestone talk while I’m here”: Gautam Gambhir after ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 win
Gautam Gambhir once again made it clear that individual milestones do not matter much in T20 cricket. He stated that this mindset will continue to guide the team as long as he remains the head coach. Gambhir added that winning trophies is far more important than achieving personal records.
The 44-year-old said during the post-match press conference after the final:
“My simple philosophy with Surya has always been that milestones don’t matter. It’s the trophies that matter. For too long in Indian cricket, we’ve spoken about milestones. And I hope that till I’m there, we’re not going to talk about milestones.”
“Stop celebrating milestones, celebrate trophies. That is going to be important because the bigger purpose of a team sport is to win trophies, not score individual runs. It has never mattered to me, and it will never matter to me… You can see it in the last three games, what Sanju did. 97 not out, 89, 89. Imagine if you had been playing for a milestone. Probably we wouldn’t have got 250.”
