When we talk about the Indian Premier League, we do talk about the champions sides but what makes these sides a champion side is the bank of individual performances through the league. As we know the highest run-scorer wins the Orange cap whereas the highest wicket-taker wins the purple cap in the IPL. From Sachin Tendulkar to David Warner everyone has won it in the past.

This season too we find that KL Rahul and Kagiso Rabada are in the race for the coveted awards. But over the years, we’ve seen that these individual awards don’t always contribute to the team’s overall success. Last year when Mumbai Indians won the IPL title for the fourth time in history, they won it without any player winning the Orange or Purple cap.

Purple and Orange Cap Don’t Matter – Ravichandran Ashwin

Similarly this year, Ravichandran Ashwin has spoken about the same point how the Orange and Purple cap is an eyewash for the fans as in the end it’s about contributing to the side’s victory. He put out his point forward in an episode of his own show on YouTube, as he went on to answer a query raised by one of his fans.

“Such numbers don’t matter. Purple and Orange Cap is an eye-wash. It’s about contributing towards victory, playing your roles (in victory),” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel answering a fan’s query about whether strike-rates are over-rated and all the statistical inputs at times are over-hyped or not.

Ravichandran Ashwin went on to discuss further more with South Africa national side’s performance analyst Prasanna Agoram. He believes that it’s not about the personal milestones but the impact of the performance on the team’s win. As a result, one shouldn’t pay much heed to personal awards as team’s win is more important than anything.

“If you are nine wickets down with 10 runs to get, you might end up playing a defensive shot off the fifth ball of the 19th over. It is as per the need of the team. This is just for analysis,” Ravichandran Ashwin said while discussing with South African national team’s performance analyst Prasanna Agoram.
