Families of cricketers will not be allowed to travel to down under for India’s Tour of Australia later this year. The development was confirmed by the BCCI in a meeting where they met to discuss the date of the selection of squads for the series. India will tour Australia for four Tests, three T20I and three ODIs. As per a report in Times of India, the BCCI is likely to announce the squad by next week in the middle of the IPL season. The selectors are in process of chalking the best possible squad out for the series.
No Family Members Allowed to Travel for India’s Tour of Australia
The BCCI might announce a squad of 32 members, where no family members will be allowed to accompany the players to Australia. With this being a lot series and with the threat of COVID-19 and injuries in mind, the selection committee has decided to announce a jumbo squad.
With the support staff taken together the squad strength is expected to cross 50 for the much-awaited tour. Meanwhile, unlike the IPL in the UAE, family members of cricketers will not be allowed to travel with the team for this all-important series.
“They (selection committee) have been told to pick as large a squad as they want. We want back-up players ready and in Australia right through the tour. If a player gets injured, there shouldn’t be a situation where we have to call for a player from India,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
Meanwhile, BCCI Sourav Ganguly said that the dates for the limited-overs leg of the series has not been decided yet despite Cricket Australia sending an itinerary.
“Cricket Australia has sent us an itinerary. We will play three T20Is, three ODIs, and four Tests there. The first Test will be a day-night game in Adelaide. The dates haven’t been finalised yet,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said earlier this week.
The cricketers and the support staff has to undergo a 14-day quarantine period in Dubai before the Indian squad leaves for Australia. A few practice games for non-IPL players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, will be arranged by the BCCI during their stay in Dubai.
