Team India’s new batting prodigy Shubman Gill had a glaring start to his Test career against Australia when they toured Down Under last year. But since then, he has failed to convert his starts and former India cricketer VVS Laxman has highlighted the worrying signs for the cricketer from Moga.
After a terrific start where he played all shots against the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood, the opponent teams are slowly figuring out the faults in Shubman Gill’s technique. Shubman had made his debut at Melbourne against Australia and scored a 50 in SCG and a match-winning 91 in Brisbane Test. But since then, he has failed to convert the starts and has only looked good in patches.
Shubman Gill needs to work on incoming deliveries – VVS Laxman
On Thursday, England’s James Anderson once again trapped the youngster LBW after setting him up beautifully. Speaking on the post-match show on Star Sports, VVS Laxman went into details with regards to technical shortcomings that Shubman Gill has shown in his short career.
“Definitely (he needs to work against the incoming deliveries) especially on a wicket like this which is a flat one compared to the previous pitches in Chennai and Ahmedabad. He’s got little bit of a technical issue. You can see his head is falling over, his right leg is coming across just to overcompensate,” Laxman said in the post-match show on Star Sports.

Adding further, VVS Laxman pointed out that Shubman Gill will be under immense pressure in the second innings of the ongoing Test match with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul waiting for their opportunity. Agarwal was recently dropped in the Australia series after a string of poor scores where Mitchell Starc made him his bunny with inswing deliveries.
“I just felt once he got starts, he did not convert them into big scores and now the pressure will be on him, you also have to remember you’ve got KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal waiting for their opportunities,” Laxman added.
