Shubman Gill showed why he is considered the future of Indian cricket during the Test series against Australia away from home. Gill made his debut at MCG and from ball 1 looked a class apart and dominated the strong Aussie bowling attack. His best knock undoubtedly came on day 5 of the Brisbane test at ‘Gabba’ when he smashed a counter-attacking 91 after which India went after the target.
Once I got to the 90s, I was getting nervous-Shubman Gill
The 20-year-old was all set to score his maiden Test 100 when suddenly against the run of play he edged one to first slip. Gill was extremely disappointed after missing on a 100 as it could have been match-winning and one that would have been forever remembered. Speaking about his fine knock at Gabba, Gill admitted that he got nervous once he reached the 90s. He rated his fine knock 9 out of 10 and added that he deserved a century.
“I really wanted to get 100 on that day I thought I deserved it. But once I got to the 90s, I knew that I was getting a bit nervous. I thought I would ask for drinks to calm down my nerves but I got out in the same over. If I have to rate my innings it was nine out of 10. If I would have got a 100 obviously I would have been able to express myself more,” Shubman Gill told PTI.
Meanwhile, his knock gave India much needed momentum and they were able to script history by winning the Test series in Australia again. Shubman Gill wasn’t able to convert his starts in the home series against England but he has no regrets as he feels he got out on good deliveries.
“When I look back, I don’t think I would have done anything differently. I don’t have any regrets. I don’t think there is any concern in not being able to convert those starts. If I see my innings, there are very few innings in which I’ve thrown my wicket away. In most of the innings, where I have not been able to convert my starts, there have been good balls,” Shubman Gill added.
Furthermore, Shubman Gill is now gearing up for IPL 2021 where he will be opening the batting for Kolkata Knight Riders.
