BCCI has been silent regarding Team India and its request for Shubman Gill’s replacements. The youngster has been ruled out following an injury that was aggravated during the WTC Final.
On June 28, as per the Board’s protocol, the Indian team manager wrote an e-mail to India’s chief selector Chetan Sharma. It consisted of a plea to fill up the opening slot that was available. Along with that, it called for a backup in case of another injury.
Since the Indian team in England has a two-month-long stay, it’s only fair to have other options for multiple reasons.
1) Mental fatigue can cause players to underperform.
2) An injury could mean the options get lesser.
3) Quarantine rules render the backup useless if not brought in quickly.
Its already been more than a week since the email was sent. Unfortunately, there has been no response from Chetan Sharma yet. A few sources shared the opinion that “even if the BCCI doesn’t want to send replacements for Team India, why not just spell it out? That way, Virat and the rest of the guys can just concentrate on what’s at hand”.
Unfair to make Abhimanyu Easwaran debut against English pacers
The letter that was sent does not specify the players but instead focuses on the need for batsmen. The final decision to be made will be taken by Chetan Sharma-led selectors.
India already has a couple of backup options, one of them – Abhimanyu Easwaran – is included as a standby. The sources stated that the youngster might be put through a lot in his debut series. This kind of match-up could make or break Abhimanyu’s career for India.
“Abhimanyu Easwaran has done well in First-class cricket but is it fair to make him debut against Anderson, Archer, and Broad? KL Rahul is not being considered as an opener but in the middle-order. So if Gill’s injury demands a replacement, and if there’s time to fly one in, what’s the harm? To rush him[Abhimanyu] like this and not give an ear to what the team is thinking is not a healthy sign,” the source said.
